The UK Border Agency is responsible for securing the UK borders and controlling migration in the UK. UKBA manage border control for the UK to enforce immigration and customs regulations. UKBA are also responsible for considering applications for permission to enter or stay in the UK, and for citizenship and asylum.
AIT or the First-tier & Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) are a tribunal that hears appeals against decisions made by the Home Secretary and his officials in asylum, immigration and nationality matters. The main types of appeal we hear are made against decisions to:
- Refuse a person asylum in the UK.
- Refuse a person entry to, or leave to remain in, the UK for permanent settlement.
- Deport someone already in the UK.
- Refuse a person entry to the UK for a family visit
The Identity and Passport Service is responsible for issuing UK passports and identity cards and for the registration of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales. It is an executive agency of the Home Office.

The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) is an independent, non-departmental public body set up under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
The OISC's key responsibilities are:
- regulating immigration advisers
- promoting good practice by setting standards
- accepting and addressing complaints about anyone giving immigration advice
- prosecuting those who operate outside of the law
- oversight of the regulation of those who give immigration advice and are regulated by one of the Designated Professional Bodies
